BYD Outsells Toyota in Japan's EV Market

In a historic victory, BYD officially surpassed Toyota in electric vehicle sales on Toyota"s home turf for the first time last year.

Having forced traditional automakers out of China with its low-cost electric vehicles, BYD is making strong efforts in overseas markets.

BYD launched its first electric vehicle in Japan in early 2023, the Atto 3.

This SUV starts at around $30,000 and competes with popular domestic cars such as the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. It also competes with other electric vehicles in the market, such as the Toyota bZ4X and Nissan Ariya.

In its first full year of sales, BYD has already surpassed Toyota in electric vehicle sales in Japan. This achievement is even more impressive considering that Toyota has historically dominated sales in its home market.

According to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association, BYD sold 2,223 electric vehicles in 2024. In comparison, Toyota sold only 2,038 electric vehicles in its home market last year.

BYD"s electric vehicle sales increased by 54% compared to 2023, while Toyota"s sales declined by 30% year-on-year.

Since its launch in 2023, BYD has introduced several best-selling models, including the Dolphin hatchback and the Seal sedan.

The Dolphin, starting at just 2.99 million yen ($19,000), competes with best-selling domestic cars like the Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf.

After launching the Seal in June, which is widely seen as a Tesla Model 3 competitor, BYD"s electric sedan has already become the best-selling imported electric vehicle in Japan by August.

The Seal from BYD starts at 5.28 million yen, or about $33,500.

BYD is increasing the pressure in 2025 with plans to launch the Sealion 07 in Japan, its new mid-size intelligent electric SUV.

Key points highlighted in this achievement:

  • BYD"s surpassing of Toyota in its home market: This achievement is a clear indicator of the progress BYD has made in the electric vehicle sector and its ability to compete with the most established global companies.
  • The rapid growth of BYD"s sales: BYD"s sales grew significantly by 54% compared to the previous year, while Toyota"s sales declined by 30%.
  • Product diversity: BYD has introduced a diverse range of electric vehicles to meet the needs of a wide range of customers, which has contributed to increasing its market share.
  • Competitive pricing: BYD"s cars are distinguished by their affordable prices, making them an attractive option for consumers.

With BYD continuing to launch new and innovative models and expand its dealer network in Japan, the company is expected to see further growth and success in the coming years.
